According to a new study, scientists have found that 99.9% of the novel coronavirus can be killed by UV light irradiation. The results were published on Thursday, June 24th, 2020 in a paper of the renowned journal “Nature”. The study was conducted at Columbia University’s Irving Medical Center. Scientists have already proven in the past that UV light can kill influenza viruses. The findings can now also be transferred with regard to the novel coronavirus.

How long does the killing take?

According to the study, far UV light kills 90% of airborne viruses in 8 minutes, 95% in 11 minutes, and 99% in 16 minutes. After 25 minutes, 99.9% of the viruses have been killed.

Short-wave UV light can kill the germs within seconds.

Is the UV light safe?

Different wavelengths were tested in the study. The authors point out that far UV light is harmless to humans. With short-wave UV light, care should be taken not to expose the sensitive retina of the eyes to radiation. With long-wave or distant UV light there are no dangers, not even for the retina.

This means that in the future public spaces in which people are located can be disinfected using long-wave UV light.

Can I safely use UV lamps?

The UV lamps emit short-wave light. They are just as effective for all everyday items and kill 99.9% of viruses. However, we would like to emphasize again at this point that the light must not be used to sterilize the direct skin (e.g. hands or arms). Be careful not to shine the stick into your eyes.

You will find a selection of very good and practical UV light devices in our shop.
